The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the authoritative voice for the environment within the United Nations system. This position is located at UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), based in Bangkok, Thailand. The successful candidate will report directly to the Regional Coordinator for the Nature Action Subprogramme and will work under the overall supervision of the Regional Director.
Role Overview
The Associate Programme Management Officer will support the effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of environmental projects and initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region. The role is instrumental in ensuring that regional activities under the Nature Action Subprogramme align with UNEP’s broader strategic goals and contribute meaningfully to global sustainability and biodiversity efforts.
The incumbent will work closely with internal teams, partner organizations, government counterparts, and civil society stakeholders to support programme delivery, track progress, and foster collaboration for nature-positive development outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Programme Implementation Support: Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing programme activities under the Nature Action Subprogramme, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of outcomes.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Contribute to tracking and reporting on the performance of regional projects, including data collection, analysis, and preparation of progress reports.
- Coordination and Liaison: Facilitate effective coordination with internal UNEP divisions, UN agencies, regional bodies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to enhance programme coherence and knowledge exchange.
- Project Development: Support the preparation of project documents, funding proposals, concept notes, and strategic frameworks, in alignment with UNEP priorities and donor requirements
- Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct background research and contribute to knowledge products related to nature conservation, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity management.
Competencies
- Professionalism: Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand complex environmental issues and translate them into actionable programme interventions. Familiarity with results-based management and monitoring tools is desirable.
- Planning and Organizing: Ability to prioritize activities, manage time effectively, and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
- Communication: Clear and effective written and oral communication skills, with an ability to adapt content for different audiences and purposes.
- Teamwork: Capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and foster an inclusive working environment.
Education
A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, sustainable development, public administration, international relations, or a related field is required. An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant area is desirable and may substitute for two years of required work experience.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in programme or project management, administration, or related fields is required. Experience working on environmental sustainability, biodiversity, or nature-based solutions in an international context is highly advantageous. Experience in the Asia-Pacific region is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language, particularly one relevant to the Asia-Pacific region, is an advantage.
Assessment
Qualified candidates will be assessed through a competency-based interview and may be required to complete a written assessment or simulation exercise as part of the evaluation process.
